*~*~*~*      *~*~*~*      RETURN TO PLAY - ADULTS & JUNIORS      *~*~*~*        *~*~*~*

We are delighted to report that with risk assessments performed, COVID awareness certificates earned and hand sanitiser purchased, we have ticked all the boxes to facilitate the start of a new season of club badminton for Senior and Junior members.

As in any season, there are risks in participating in sport, and this year there are obviously some additional COVID related risks. However, the committee believe the risks to be low and these need to be weighed up against the risks to health of not being active. Based on Badminton England and government guidelines, we are confident that we can run safe and enjoyable sessions. However, the decision to participate rests solely with members and registering for sessions indicates acceptance of this risk.

Given the uncertainties over the nature of the season, we have decided to split the season into two – the first period to run from September to Christmas. As usual, visitors will be permitted to play three times before needing to join [the adult section].

To manage risks to follow the government and Badminton England guidelines the following policies will be in place from the start of the season. Obviously things may change as the situation and advice changes.

Prior to session:

  • ADULTS & GOLD JUNIORS must register for a session by 7pm on the Monday prior to club night. Members within our database, will receive an invitation to an 'event' (a Club Night) via our GroupSpaces tool. This will give member the opportunity to book a place (or decline) for that individual session, and declare they are free of COVID symptoms.
  • We will assume the routine attendance of BRONZE & SILVER JUNIORS. Therefore, it is crucial that you notify us if they CANNOT attend a particular session in advance.
  • Do NOT attend if you have any signs of COVID (high temperature, new persistent cough, or loss of taste/smell) NHS Coronavirus Symptoms
  • Do not use the changing rooms: arrive in appropriate sportswear
  • Do not share lifts to/from the sessions
  • Discuss with us if you wish to attend, but consider yourself vulnerable/at-risk or have an underlying medical condition or have concerns about attending
  • If subsequently you are unable to attend the session you MUST contact the Organiser to let them know, giving as much notice as possible.
During session:
  • Sanitise hands on arrival
  • Avoid use of toilets if possible
  • Arrive in outdoor shoes and change into indoor shoes on arrival
  • Do not share racquets/water-bottles or other equipment
  • Avoid touching face
  • Only play with players in your allocated bubble on the court(s) assigned to your bubble
  • Do not share shuttles between bubbles
  • Bring minimal “stuff” into session (kit-bags etc)
  • Avoid touching “stuff” (nets/posts/doors…) where possible
After session:
  • Sanitise hands on departure
  • Notify club if you develop symptoms within 7 days of having played
FOR THE ADULT & GOLD JUNIOR SESSIONS. Once session registrations have been received, a committee member will group players into bubbles of no more than six, and players will be notified of their assigned bubble and court(s) on arrival on Wednesday.

Looking forward to seeing you all back on court.

August 2020

*~*~*~*~*        *~*~*~*~*        COVID19 UPDATE - AUGUST        *~*~*~*~*        *~*~*~*~*

We are very happy to announce some positive news in relation to both the Junior and Senior Clubs.

Whilst we remain in Phase 2 of Badminton England's road map to returning to play, the restrictions have further loosened, allowing players from different households to share a court in 'bubbles' of up to 6.

This; along with confirmation from Ashcombe School that we can book their Sports Hall from September, means that we can now prepare to offer social badminton for our Adult members, and socially distanced coaching to our Junior members.

To this end, the club's committee will meet on Wednesday 26 August to discuss a pathway to restarting both sections of the club in the very near future.

We are always looking for new members, so if you are interested in joining, please contact the club secretary - Paul Novell - secretary@dorkingbadmintonclub.co.uk

Please return for further updates in the coming days and weeks. Existing members will receive emails once we have a more comprehensive plan and start dates.

July 2020

*~*~*~*~*        *~*~*~*~*        COVID19 UPDATE - JULY        *~*~*~*~*        *~*~*~*~*

The Culture Secretary's announcement of 9 July, re-opening limited indoor sport from 24 July, changes little for us as a Club.

This only allows a move from Phase 1 to Phase 2 of BE's road map to returning to play. Phase 2 only permits indoor doubles play when players are from the SAME household.

Under the current Phase 2 guidelines, we cannot feasibly offer social or competitive badminton, nor deliver coaching to our Junior members.

We can only keep our fingers crossed that the prevalence of the virus continues to decrease whereby we can quickly move to Phase 3, at which point mixed households will be able to compete on the same court.

Please return for more updates as and when rules are further relaxed. Existing members will receive emails when we know more and are in a position to kick-start the new season.

June 2020

*~*~*~*~*        *~*~*~*~*        COVID19 UPDATE - JUNE        *~*~*~*~*        *~*~*~*~*

Sadly, the latest loosening of COVID19 restrictions in the Sport and Leisure sector, did very little to benefit indoor sports.

Under the current guidelines, we cannot feasibly offer social or competitive badminton, nor deliver coaching to our Junior members.

Badminton England are currently working closely with the Government to identify when indoor badminton can return as a priority.

Until restrictions are lifted which make it viable to recommence, we remain a club in limbo.

Please return for more updates as and when rules are further relaxed. Existing members will receive emails when we know more and are in a position to kick-start the new season.

  • Surrey Ladies           Rachel Dempsey

  • Sutton Mixed            Mike Wood

September 2019

Team selection/practise nights will be held on Sundays 22nd & 29th September between 6-8pm.

We are highly unlikely to require more than 3 courts, so GOLD Junior members are invited to use the spare courts (free of charge).

The session will be not be strictly supervised, although Senior players (including Junior Coaches) will be in the hall should there be any issues. Participants will be expected to set up and take down posts/nets themselves. No firm commitment necessary - just turn up. No club shirt necessary nor payment required. DBC GOLD Juniors only.

July 2019

The new season for the Senior section starts at 8pm on Wednesday 4th September 2019.

Junior sessions (at Ashcombe School) will commence a week later on Wednesday 11th September 2019.
Session times for the Bronze Group will be from 6pm to 7pm.
Session times for the Silver Group will be from 7pm to 8pm.

We are delighted to announce that from September 2019, we will have a satellite club (for Juniors) running on Thursday afternoons in Dorking. This is an alternative to the Wednesday club, and Juniors cannot participate in both.

If you are interested in joining either the Adult or Junior section, please contact the club secretary - Paul Novell - secretary@dorkingbadmintonclub.co.uk

FOOTNOTE:- [31/08/19] Due to an unprecedented number of applications (for the Junior Section), we are currently having to put all new enquiries on a standby list as we are oversubscribed, in spite of opening up the satellite session at the Dorking Sports Centre. Do not let this deter you from applying as we were unable to offer first choice (of day) to all applicants, so there's a chance of places becoming available if second option is declined.

January 2019

Terry's Tournament 2019 will be held on Wednesday 30th January.

The tournament is a light-hearted competition run in honour of our previous club chairman Terry Seaforth who ran annual tournaments at Dorking Badminton Club for many years. The tournament is open to both current members (seniors and “gold” juniors) and past members (£5 entry fee for non-members).

For those of you not familiar with the format, we play several rounds of randomly selected games with different partners in each round. There is an arbitrary and top-secret handicapping system designed to ensure that winning takes both luck and skill. Wearing a tank top and/or playing in Converse shoes (Terry’s favourite attire) will lead to a favourable handicap.

We will be collecting donations for St Catherine’s Hospice: please bring money if you would like to donate!

We usually have a good turn-out, so it is likely that some people will have to sit-out at least one round. If anyone would like to bring nibbles, that would make the sitting out more enjoyable!

It helps enormously in running the event if you can e-mail MARK to let him know in advance whether you plan to attend.

We will try to get the first round off at 8:15 sharp, so please be warmed up and ready to play by then (or if that is not possible, let Mark know if you are going to be late).

Please wear a club shirt if you have one (we have some for sale for anyone that needs one!).
